The European Union launched in 2008 the European Green Capital award.

The cities that have access to this title are examined on a complete list of environmental criteria. Any European city of more than 200,000 people that is a landmark in this respect can qualify for the award.

October 21, 2010, Vitoria-Gasteiz was designated by the European Commission as European green Capital 2012. This award is intended to recognize those cities that:

  • They have given consistent evidence of environmental standards.
  • They agree to consider new ambitious goals for the improvement of the environment and sustainable development.
  • They can act as a model to inspire other cities and promote best practices to all the other European cities.

Thus, Vitoria-Gasteiz has become a model for green action and now deserves to share their practices with other cities to contribute to the defence of the environment in Europe.

This award is the highest recognition to more than thirty years of proposals and initiatives, respectful of the environment and a commitment to sustainable development policies. This aspect, combined with the commitment and involvement of citizens has led him finally to be Green Capital in 2012.
